We don’t go into Atlanta to eat all that often but sometimes we make exceptions for special occasions and a ‘Holiday Soiree’ with the folks from ConnieLou’s office qualifies as a special occasion. This year’s soiree took us to Agave Restaurant in Atlanta’s Cabbagetown neighborhood. Agave bills itself as an “eclectic southwestern eatery and tequila bar”.
ConnieLou and I arrived a little early so we had time to order a couple of margaritas to sip on while we waited for everyone else to arrive.
Rather than ordering from the menu, dinner was served family style so everyone could get a taste of more than one dish. So here’s a rundown:
Appetizers
Chopped salad with mango, black beans, smoked bacon and chiles
Smoked chicken and Hatch green chile quesadillas
Southwestern shrimp and poblano chile spring rolls
Entrees
Cayenne fried chicken with a roasted poblano drizzle
Seared mahi mahi over a New Mexico green chile cream sauce
Lime and garlic marinated flatiron steak with peppers and onions
Sides
Mac and cheese
Grilled zucchini and squash
Desserts
Homemade key lime pie on a peppery ginger crust
Cinnamon whipped cream and strawberries
Wines served with dinner included Novarro Correas Malbec and Seven Falls Chardonnay
I’m not going to critique each individual dish but judging from the bits and pieces, or lack thereof, left on the plates as they were cleared from the table, dinner was either quite good or everyone was quite hungry. OK, maybe it was some of both.
With 20-plus people at the table it was a bit impractical to take a Thumbs survey but I can say that ConnieLou and I both gave Agave two thumbs up. I’m thinking Agave might be a good date night destination sometime!
Oh, and by the way, they mix a mean margarita too.
